It was the First Church to be Built in Belem. Its construction started in 1626 and finished in 1636. It was refurbished in the XVII century based on the project developed by Italian architech Antonio Landi (1713-1791).

In the place where the church stands, used to be a Farm owned by Mr Bento Maciel Parente, who donated it to the order of Secular Carmelites.

During the rebelion called Cabanagem, the church was used by the troops loyal to the Imperial goverment. Soldiers were not killed because the Bishop Dom Romulado Coelho interfered in the fight.
