Saint Alexander Church

This was the second Church Constructed in Belém. At first, it was constructed as aschool and named Alexander because the Jesuits received from Pope Urban VIII, the remains of the Saint, so the school was created bearing his name. At the beginning, the church had 5 steeples and 5 bells and one of these bells came from Peru where the jesuits Mission had come from when they entered the Amazon Region. The Church was open in December 3rd 1668 when the Priest Bettendorf celebrated the first mass

The Church has a Barroque style with 8 chapels located sideways and has many articrafts donated by the Indians and the Jesuits.

Today the Church is used for many cultural events as well as Liturgical. It is also a Museum open to the public daily. This masterpiece is considered one of best Jesuits works in the Northern Region of Brazil. The Museum has over 320 articrafts on display.
