The cherry can be eaten directly from the tree or made into jam, juices or wine. It has an either sweet or sour taste depending on the degree of ripeness: red to black tastes sweet, green to orange tastes sour. Pitanga has a high concentration of vitamin C (25 mg out of 100 g). It cannot be exported due to its short durability.
